The Step is built around how two fingers actually sit on a pen. Your index finger is shorter than your middle finger, so the two contact points are offset to match that difference rather than forcing both fingers onto the same level.
It also works a different way. The natural curve of your finger wrapping around the pen lets you push into the side of the top step and wedge into the gap between the two levels. Instead of two separate contact points, you get an angled pocket your finger can sit in.
